 1949                    Born in Kyoto
1967                    Graduates from Kyoto Munincipal Hiyoshigako Senior High School (Lacquer Art
                            under Mr. Kyohei Mizuuchi)
          Wins first price at Exhibition of Graduation Art Works
1967                    Studies urushi under lacquer artist Masaya Suzuki
1970                   Studies woodworking under his father Syouzo Saratani   
1971                    Is employed as makie artist at Zohiko, a famous lacquerware store in Kyoto
1975                    Moves to Vienna, Austria. Employment at Austrian Museum of Applied Arts (MAK).
                            Duration of stay in Vienna: 10 years.
          Repairs and restores private urushi collections, among others Karel
                            Schwarzenberg’s collection, as well as collections in German and Austrian museums
1978                    Holds research presentation at the International Institute for Conservation of Historic
                           and Artistic Works (I.I.C.) in Oxford, UK (sent by the Japan Foundation)
1980                   Participates at International Crafts Exhibition in Vienna
1984                   Organizes exhibition of small urushi objects at Eskenazi Ltd., London.
1985                   Moves to London, UK. Duration of stay: 4 years.
                           Collaborates with auction houses like Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Eskenazi Ltd.
                           Repairs and restores works for art galleries and private collectors.
1989                   Moves to Chicago, Illinois, USA. Duration of stay: 4 years.
                           Repairs urushi artworks, founds restoration company YAMATO Inc.
1992                   Returns to Japan. Repairs and restores urushi artworks in Asahikawa, Hokkaido.
1995                   Moves to Biei city in Hokkaido, founds workshop (KUNSTHAUS).
                           Organizes personal exhibitions in Hokkaido: Asahikawa Art Gallery, SEIBU
                           Asahikawa, Marui Imai Sapporo, Obihiro Fujimaru etc.
2002                   Organizes exhibition at London’s Malcolm Fairey Gallery (thereafter every year)
2003, January    Appears at NHK special program “Sennen no Takuminowaza wo mamoritai“
2003, October    Publishes “Shitsugei – Nihon ga Suteta Takaramono (Urushi Art – Abandoned
                           Treasure in Japan, in Japanese) at Kobunshashinsho, Kobunsha Co., Ltd
2009                   Founds urushi workshop KURI  (Kaga Urushi Restauration & conservation Intership)
                           in Kaga, Ishikawa
2011                   Moves back to Austria Gramatneusiedl .
2013,  March      Transfer the workshop to Brendenmarkt Hubertendorf castle in Austria.
2014                 "Tomizo Saratani  Lacquer Art Exhibition" At Kanazawa International Exchange Salon.               
                          sponsored by Kaga City, Hokkoku Shimbun and Yoshii Shoten
2016,  January    Based in Kyoto City .
2017,  August      Moves the Austrian workshop to the city of Vienna.
2017,  September 16th- December 3rd, 
                           Special exhibition "Amazing Craftsmanship from the Meiji to the contemporary art"
