Restoration
In Europe and the US, restoration of buildings, wall paintings, oil paintings and sculptures is common, and restorators have a recognized position in society. For some reason, the profession of restoration is not really acknowledged in Japan, which is why it is our mission – as urushi specialists – to preserve and restore urushi which is part of Japan’s cultural heritage, and to pass it on to the next generations, together with the related knowledge.
Just like a physician who has to adapt to the needs of each patient, we have to adapt our techniques to the condition of each piece of art. This requires quite a lot of practice, but the number of clients who entrust their beloved artworks to young artists is limited. First of all, these artists have to earn their clients’ trust in order to be entrusted with their pieces of art.
